Universal Robot Band - Space Disco

"We are going to SPACE!"

My Review of 'Space Disco' by Universal Robot band.

I seriously love this track. Probably one of the most cosmic sounding disco tracks ever made. The vocals are eerie but suggest the vastness of space. There's a nice high pitched 3 note synth melody /riff that repeats and seems to drift and fade by changing pace and emphasizing different notes. There's great dynamics throughout the track and is really well mixed. A lot of the electronic sounds and the instruments sound improvised, giving a real jazzy cosmic sound.

The pace is steady, and gives a good sense of drifting. There's a really relaxing bongo break that slowly builds back with the electronica and the bass line comes back followed by the strings. The whole track slowly builds again, with a little more syncopation towards the end to wrap things up.

Truly cosmic disco jazz funk at it's best.

Mini Biography for 'Universal Robot Band'

The Universal Robot band included the now legendary disco funk producers Gregory Carmichael, Patrick Adams and Leroy Burgess (Black Ivory). They were formed in 1976 from members of the band 'Kleeer' who were previously known as both the 'Jam Band' and 'Pipeline'. Their first single 'Dance and Shake Your Tambourine' was released in 1976 and their debut album, of the same name followed in the following year on the 'Red Greg' Label. Patrick Adams, like with most of his other 'projects' added synth work, giving them a cosmic feel to the music especially in the track 'Space Disco' a cosmic disco classic. They also recorded two disco versions of the well known 'Flintsones' and 'Star Trek' themes.

In 1979 the band released a further album 'Freak in the light of the Moon' but then decided to re-form 'Kleeer' but later released the classic 'Barely Breaking Even' disco track in 1982 again under the name 'Universal Robot Band'
