My review of 'Spank' by Jimmy Bo Horne

What a tune! What an awesome keyboard intro and thankfully the theme returns during the instrumental sections of the track. The tune has great syncopation and a driving bass line, complimenting horns and some great breaks. Jimmy's vocals are both soulful and passionate, and he shows great contrast with the lyrics between the romantic soul of "Let's make love from my heart... I'm quite sure our love won't go blind" and the more cheeky sounding "Spank!". It's no wonder this track has been sampled / re-mixed / re-edited as much as it has, it's a real gem - a soulful funky disco song with superb synocopation to get ya movin'!

Jimmy 'Bo' Horne Biography

Jimmie Bo Horne (who is normally referred to as Jimmy 'Bo' Horne) was born and raised in Florida. The nickname 'Bo' was given to him by his father and is short for 'Bowlegged'. He was first signed to a record label, Dig Records a subsidiary of T.K. records in 1967 when he was just 18. A radio DJ, Joe Fisher, had introduced him to Henry Stone and also had him sing on his radio shows. His first single was 'I Can't Speak' followed by 'If You Want My Love' and 'Street Corners'. Most of his early music was soul music rather than disco and Jimmie always felt more comfortable as a soul singer.

After graduating from college with a degree in Sociology Jimmy worked as a Youth Counselor and continued to make music. After a while he was confident enough that his music alone would provide for him. He he signed to the T.K. records subsidiary 'Alston' where he recorded 'Clean Up Man'.

Jimmy then went on to work with Harry Wayne Casey (KC) and Richard Finch from KC and the Sunshine Band and recorded 'Don't Worry About It' and 'Gimme Some' in 1975. Gimme some reached 47 in the US R&B chart.

'Dance across the Floor' was Jimmies' first LP which was released in 1978 and was successful in Europe as well as America. Jimmie went on to release 'Goin Home For Love' an LP on the Sunshine Label owned by KC.

The single 'Spank' was actually written by Ron Louis Smith the horn player from The sunshine band.
